Module 5
The lab for Module 5 was centered around doing statistical density work in the form of wine consumption in Europe. As Europe is known for the Mediterranean diet which many countries there at least loosely follow it actually almost centers around drinking wine. Hence the reason there is even a need for a statistic on wine consumption in this area. It can be seen that the higher density areas of wine are the ones which are more to the coasts which are much more known to follow these diets but there are outliers as well. We started this lab by creating and recreating our tables so that we could play with a couple different factors like using graduated or proportional styles for gathering our data. I choose graduate because I feel like it reads a lot better on the maps and gives the normal feel of a smaller symbol translates into a smaller number on the map to read. This isn't how proportional was playing out for me as it was giving me weird readings with my symbols seeming to go from huge symbols on the smaller symbols and going up having smaller symbols for larger numbers which would have just been a bit confusing on a map such as this. After combing my population density measurements by using yellow to red (yellow being less dense and red being more dense) to help understand that population densities in these countries throughout the continent. I took the bones of this and turned it into a density for wine consumption in every country as well (minus a couple fluctuating countries which would have distorted information). Upon finishing the map it can read the densities of the populations with color variation and the consumption amounts in liters of wine in every country by a changing grape symbol in size. This map also helped me utilize bringing an inset map into my layout with having to get a close up on some of the smaller countries to make their statistics more readable. This week helped me to truly learn how to properly organize statistics on a map which can be used for numerous aspects primarily centered around short term census work in certain areas.
