Blog Post # 1 : Introduction to Internship

Hello my name is Christopher Williamson and I will be apart of Group 1 for my Internship this semester. I am also planning on joining the GIS Professional User Group Florida Chapter of URISA (FLURISA).  I plan on doing my internship at a couple of our local state parks but, I will be primarily based out of Big Lagoon State Park. I am planning on doing a variety of different things from surveying invasive plants for treatment. I will be attempting to map out all of not only our fire lines but the trails as well to ensure they can be properly traversed if someone comes in that isn't familiar with that park. I will also be entailing water sources as well as a bit of contour lines for grade change as well if possible. Most of my credit will likely be earned mapping invasive plants though as they are the primary thing that we target in the current department I am in. Invasive plants not only chase of natives which ruins our original biodiversity in the area but can also come with some nasty side effects with little to no benefits either. This is why we target them for removal to help bring the original ecosystem back so our natives can flourish. Properly mapping these infestations will not only help on time for finding them after survey but also so that we can keep an accurate time frame on when they have been treated or when they might need to be revisited.

I am very much looking forward to this internship opportunity and also am excited for what this semester will have to offer.

Thanks for reading!
