Module 1: Crime Analysis

Grid Overlay

Kernel Density

Local Moran's I

This assignment had roughly the same result for all three of these maps but the process was vastly different for each. While the main steps were the same in the sense of adding the files, setting the environment, using SQL functions to specify data. But then there were different tools that had to be used to reach the end result for each different map. The first analysis step was checking for familiar functions to previous projects. Then once those were identified and completed if prep work had to  be done before starting on the project. Then I worked through each step slowly and carefully having to redo steps often to ensure proper results. Some of the tools I had to research on how to use properly before employing them. This also included me brushing up online on the purpose and best use of some of the tools. In the end most of the results were fairly similar. Although, I found that the grid overlay map skipped over more data than the other two. It was much smaller which could help identify hotspots but I think it might have even passed over too much data to be fully accurate. The kernel density map was the most useful map to use for this in my opinion. I believe even though it covered a wider swathe of area. It did so in a sleek and easily readable format. Not only do I feel like this map allowed to proper coverage of all the hotspot areas. But it also presented it in a way that could be easily read and allows easy identification of not the streets themselves but also the corners/alleys that might be used. I believe this would easily allow patrols to pinpoint the exact hotspots and not a rough general area. The Local Moran's I map had the bigger area that the Kernel Density Map had compared to the Grid Overlay map. But I feel it was a bit too widespread with not enough precision to it. It still covered the area and does give you a good idea of where the hotspots are. But I feel like it might be too broad and give you too widespread of a area to reference too. It is still a very useful map function but rather than identifying specific street or corners. You have to reference to the entire block for interpretation purposes. This is why in my opinion the Kernel Density Map is the most effective and easiest one to implement for hot spot activity purposes.
