Module 5: Damage Assessment

Damage Assessment of Hurricane Sandy in Atlantic City, New Jersey October 29, 2012

In the above picture I have a screenshot which details the different parcels of land which were impacted in this study area. On the right you can see I have a structure damage rating system which corresponds with the main map by colored dots for damage levels. I have also included the attribute table to have a look into the detailing of these points as well. It shows the different scales of damage with structure damage, wind damage, inundation and tells the structure types as well. From the main map you can only see the points based on structure damage so I think this helps to understand it a little more as well. In this I had to manually put in all these points and identify them myself based on satellite imagery which was quite difficult. I started by creating the different post and pre layers from pulling them out of the original database into my new one to alter their file structures. I then added the study zone and parcel which I turned transparent to blend in. After this is when I hand did all the points and then organized them by damage accordingly. I then created a buffer zone which isn't seen on this screenshot but the details will be listed in the picture below this. It shows the complete numbers of all the damaged structure based off of three specified distances from the coastline. This was a great project which gave me numerous new mapping techniques and some great applicable skills for the future! Can't wait for the final project!
