GIS Blog Spot #4: GIS Day Event

For my GIS day event I decided to do a brief demonstration and explanation of how to utilize GIS/mapping in a real life situation. My family has some land which has been getting some clearing done on it. In the the future there is a possibility of doing a burn on the land. Before being able to burn land there is a variety of things needed to be done beforehand. You must scope out making burn lines, checking out the topography of the land (because this can have a huge part in how fire could run or spot), ensuring that all of the sections are broken up evenly so you know exactly what zones you want to burn/ how many acres (you don't just want to light the ground and hope for the best. You want to zone things off and only burn so much in one spot at each time). So I decided to take run over some maps of the area explaining the topography and how that could play into the fire. We walked the property lines and I showed how you would map these out. Showed how to save points and create safety zones.

So in this day we went over a variety of skills.

  • In field mapping with real life applications.
  • Using of contour lines to anticipate fire activity.
  • Applying points for a variety of uses (mostly in this scenario safety zones/important spots)
